Rediscovering the Joy of Gaming

I Only Play Games on Weekends Now — Here’s Why

There was a point in my life where gaming was my default way to unwind. After work or after dinner, I'd boot up whatever I was into at the time. And for a while, that was fine. It was fun, familiar, and something I looked forward to.

But recently, something started to feel off.
I’d open a game, stared at the menu, and thought like:

Do I actually want to play? Or am I just… used to it?

It was a weird moment — like realizing you're reaching for your phone out of habit and not because you really need to check anything.

So I made a decision:
What if I only game on weekends?

No big dramatic announcement. No uninstalling Steam. I just stopped logging in during the week.

When Gaming Became Just Another “Thing To Do”

I think what hit me was that gaming had started to feel like maintenance. I would log in, not because I was hyped, but because I didn’t want to miss out on a login bonus or daily task. It became routine. Like brushing your teeth — but more exhausting.

It's not always like this. There was a time when I couldn’t wait to play something new. Even older games used to pull me in for hours without me checking the clock. But lately, even “fun” games felt like work.

Taking a Step Back

Once I cut out weekday gaming, something changed. I found myself actually looking forward to the weekend again — and not just because it was a break from work. It was because I had saved something fun for myself.

When I finally sat down to play, I was more immersed, more present, more... excited. I wasn’t playing to keep up with progression systems or unlock the next cosmetic. I was playing because I wanted to.

And honestly? That small shift helped me enjoy games again.

It’s Also About How Life Changes

This probably wouldn’t have hit me as hard a few years ago. But priorities change. I’ve got more responsibilities, more things I want to focus on, and less energy to waste on things that don’t give me joy.

It’s not that I’ve “grown out” of gaming. I still love it.
But I want to game on my terms — not because the game wants me to show up every day or because the meta shifts every week.

The Point Isn't to Quit — Just to Pause

If you’re still gaming every day and loving it, great. Keep doing what works for you.

But if you're someone who’s been feeling drained or like you're gaming out of habit rather than for joy — maybe try what I did.

Don’t quit. Don’t overthink it.
Just skip a few weekdays.

Then when the weekend comes, play something that you actually want to play. Not because there’s a login reward or battle pass waiting.

Final Thought

I don’t call myself a "gamer" anymore. I still love games and I still look forward to them, but I just don’t need them to fill every empty space in my life anymore.

And ironically, I enjoy them more because of that.

If you're feeling the same way… maybe gaming less often is exactly what you need.
